Ponderay
Newsprint Company - Usk, WA - 1995-2002
Ponderay Newsprint Company, a state-of-the-art pulp mill located in
northeastern Washington state, produces newspaper print rolls.
As wood chip and other processing materials enter the mill, the material
tracking process is begun. The truck driver enters material specific
information using a touch sensitive screen, e.g., commodity, product, supplier,
trucking company, etc. (the weight is automatically captured using a serial
interface to a Toledo scale). Most items are selected from "pick
lists" that only show pertinent options based on previous selections.
This system monitors chip quality information and provides tools to accounts
payable for paying the suppliers bi-weekly. Statistical information is provided
for management.
The touch sensitive operator interface and other application functions are
written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. Database storage utilizes Microsoft SQL
Server 2000, local validation tables are stored in Microsoft Access/JET 3.0
format.

Aerojet Environmental -
Sacramento, CA - 1990-2002
Aerojet Environmental removes water from the aquifer in Rancho Cordova, CA to
monitor for pollutants. If any are found, they are removed, and the water is
returned to the aquifer.
Aerojet Environmental uses handheld technology to gather information read from
the various gauges used in the pumping and purification processes. Data
collected in the handheld is passed to the PC for storing and further handed
off to the mainframe for reporting and archiving.
This handheld data collection system was originally designed and implemented
using an xBASE language on the PC and the C language on
Itron, Incorporated. T3000 handheld computers. In 1994 this system
was upgraded to the T4000, and in 1996 the PC software was re-written in
Microsoft Visual Basic 4.0. Data structures for the PC were converted from
dBASE III+ to the Access/JET 3.0 format.

Executone
Information Systems - Milford, CT - 1998-1999
Executone Systems acts as the technical development and implementation arm of
the US Lottery
(National Indian Lottery), an Internet based gaming network. The
state-of-the-art computer and communication network is located in tiny Worley,
ID, heart of the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation.
This high-bandwidth Internet site (13 T1s), houses large DEC Alpha and
multi-processor based Intel servers that handle significant Internet traffic.
Web site development is centralized around Microsoft ASP, and the client and
server applications are written in Microsoft C 4.1 for Windows 3.11 clients and
Microsoft C 5.0 for Windows '95 and Windows NT Clients. Server side gaming
software is written in Microsoft C 5.0 and utilizes DBLib for C to invoke
Remote Procedure Calls on multiple servers. Other backoffice applications, such
as those that validate credit card charges, are written in Visual Basic 5.0 and
Visual Foxpro.
AvantCom staff has been providing maintenance and enhancement of these
client/server Internet gaming applications. These graphic intensive Win32s
clients encrypt and compress data packets to pass to the server using a Winsock
connection. An NT Service dispatches "out-of-process" components to
handle interaction between a SQL Server based State Machine and the client
applications.
AvantCom has also been responsible for a client simulator written in Visual
C++ 5.0 and based on Microsoft Foundation Classes which is used for stress,
validation and system capacity testing of servers and other network components.

Spokane County
Department of Building and Safety - Spokane, WA - 1988-1997
Prior to automation, the Spokane County Building Inspectors were required to
carry paper copies of all active permits in their district, typically four to
five 4" three ring binders, and again, that was just for a single
district. It was impossible to find the proper permit when it came time for an
inspection, and more than impossible to find any inspection history for a given
permit.
Thanks to AvantCom and the Itronix
T5EFP the inspector now has instant access to over 7,000 active projects
and 16,000 inspection histories, the entire county.
This system was originally designed and implemented in 1988 using an xBASE
language on the PC, and the C language on Itron,
Incorporated T4000 handheld computers. In 1994 this system was
upgraded to the T5EFP, and the
PC portion rewritten using Access 2.0. The handheld to PC communications
interface was also re-written at this time in Visual C++ for optimal
performance.
In early 1997 the PC software was ported to Microsoft Access '97 and the
mainframe interface automated using Microsoft SQL Server 6.5.
